I agree with you that there are a number of bizarre design choices, but a lot of the issues you present have to do with the fact that the actual logo is 3D. This is the first place where I've read some criticism about this new logo. By the way, I haven't heard or read anything about the bird facing left or backwards. I realize the first birdie faced left, but anyone semi-versed in semiotics would know that we in the west look 'right', read left-to-right, drive on the right and face forward. Anyway, it might've been a good idea to finally look forward into the future.
And who the hell cares, it has history and meaning behind it, and that all that matters.
